Probate Court Operational Changes Due to Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Beaufort County Probate Court is operating according to a phased reopening plan.

  • No public access to the Beaufort County Probate Court offices is permitted.
  • All filings by mail and in the drop box at the Beaufort County Courthouse entrance will be quarantined for 48 hours and then file stamped with the date of receipt by mail or delivery to the drop box, as the case may be.
  • All fees must be paid by mail or delivery to the drop box in a sealed envelope, subject to the 48-hour quarantine.
  • New applications for Marriage Licenses will be acce pte d by mail only. Arrangements may be made by calling the Court's offices at 843 -255-5850.
  • All non-emergency hearings previou sly scheduled to be held before this Court in either the Beaufort County Courthouse or Hilton Head Satellite Office are postponed until further notice. Hearings (including emergency hearings) may be held by videoconferencing or telephone conference , with consent of all parties, arranged on a case-by-case basis.
  • Probate Court staff will continue to be a vailable by telephone, email, and regular mail.
Beginning June 1:
  • The record room will open to 1-2 people at a time by appointment only; masks required. The record room will close at 4:30 for disinfection.
  • Appointments will be required in all case areas. Masks will be required for any in-person appointments.
  • The mail system will continue for marriage licenses and copies.
  • In-person hearings with social distancing practiced will be considered, if all parties agree.
  • All filings will continue to be subject to a 48-hour quarantine.
Beginning June 15:
  • In-person marriage license applications by appointment only; mail option will continue for marriage licenses and copies.
  • Appointments will be required for in-person meetings with staff in all case areas; masks required.
  • All filings will continue to be subject to a 48-hour quarantine.
  • The Court will follow orders from the S.C. Supreme Court regarding resumption of in-person hearings and trials.
