Highlights and Actions: Community Services and Land Use Committee and Beaufort County Council

The Beaufort County Community Services and Land Use Committee met Monday and here are some highlights:

  • Chuck Atkinson, Assistant County Administrator, gave a brief update on floodwater related topics and the County's flood insurance status. He also introduced the new County Flood Plain Manager Annie Pifer.

  • Charlie Stone, Director of Government Affairs at BJWSA gave an update on the Alljoy Sewer Project. Council made a motion to approve a resolution to commit $1 million to the Alljoy Sewer Project in the FY' 2026 budget cycle.

  • Highlights from committee action on the following agenda items:
    • Recommend approval to Council of a resolution authorizing the County Administrator to execute the necessary documents to purchase real property at Rawstrom Road
    • Recommend approval to Council to undertake due diligence and negotiations for the proposed fee simple purchase of real property known as North Widgeon

The Beaufort County Council held their regular meeting beginning at 5 p.m., Monday evening. 

Below are some highlights from that meeting:

  • First reading of an ordinance to provide for the issuance and sale of general obligation bonds of 2025 to pay for debt from existing deb service milage and fund balance
  • Public hearing and second reading of an ordinance amending the Community Development Code
  • Public hearing and second reading of an ordinance for a comprehensive plan amendment to add the Beaufort County Housing Impact Analysis to the 2040 Comprehensive Plan
  • Public hearing and second reading of an ordinance authorizing the County Administrator to enter into a lease agreement with Lowcountry Regional Transportation Authority for the County owned property at 316 Castle Rock Road

Highlights from the Consent Agenda:

  • Approval of demolition of the Agnes Major Community Center to be performed by County Public Works
  • Approval of a resolution to accept an SC Aeronautics Commission Office Grant for $750,000 for HXD Terminal Improvement Project
  • Approval of a resolution authorizing the County Administrator to enter into a facility use agreement with the Beaufort County School District             

Matters arising out of Executive Session:

  • Pursuant to legal advice regarding contractual arrangements regarding Pepper Hall/Okatie Park: Council voted/Motion Failed
  • Pursuant to the appointment of the appointment of a person to Beaufort Jasper Water Sewer Authority: Council proposes the Chairman send a letter to the County Legislative Delegation asking to reconsider the nominations and the Delegation forward Counsel's recommendation on candidates. Motion passes.

The next Community Services and Land Use Committee meeting will be Monday, November 12, at 3 p.m.

The next regular County Council meeting will be Monday, October 28, at 5 p.m.
