Beaufort County remains in constant communication with emergency, state, and utility officials as we continue clean up efforts after Hurricane Helene. Reports from public safety officials on Daufuskie Island estimate over 500 fallen trees due to Hurricane Helene. Most residents remain without power and those on wells do not have potable water.

Utilities

Daufuskie Island residents should expect and prepare for power to be out for an extended period of time: according to Dominion Energy, the effort to restore power could take multiple days. The Daufuskie Island Fire Station is working to establish a drinking water station for those who do not have potable water. A barge with gasoline will be on island as soon as possible, with propane scheduled to arrive Monday, September 30.

Debris

Beaufort County is planning to assist Daufuskie Island residents with clean up efforts by conducting a single pass to pick up storm-generated vegetative debris on the public Right-of-Way. Island residents should begin moving any storm-generated vegetative debris in front of their homes on the public Right-of-Way.

Vegetative debris is organic material such as branches, limbs, or shrubbery. Debris removal crews from on-island contractors will only be making one pass on each street. Additional information and specific timing of the debris removal pass will be released once the details have been finalized. Residents may also use the open space at Francis Jones Park as a storm debris collection site.
