Highlights and Actions: Public Facilities and Safety Committee and Beaufort County Council

The Beaufort County Public Facilities and Safety Committee met Tuesday and here are some highlights:

  • Public Works personnel update from Assistant County Administrator Jared Fralix
  • Beaufort County Animal Services Director Tallulah McGee gave updates on the County’s animal services operations as well as discussed a possible partnership with Jasper County Animal Services and the growing need for a wildlife resource center
  • Presentation on the status of Wimbee Creek Fishing Pier
  • Approved to send to Council a resolution adopting a Parks and Recreation Master Plan for County facilities; Council requested Summer Workshops to further investigate fiscal impact
  • Approved to send to Council an ordinance authorizing the acceptance of drainage easements associated with the Shell Point Area
  • Approved to send to Council to award a contract to Coastal Air Technologies for Beaufort County Disabilities and Special Needs Office HVAC replacement
  • Discussion of possiblie amendments to the proposed 2024 Transportation Sales and Use Tax ordinance and referendum--Council requested a special called meeting to further discuss community feedback, project prioritization and fiscal impact

The Beaufort County Council held their regular meeting immediately following the Public Facilities and Safety Committee meeting Tuesday evening. 

Below are some highlights from that meeting:

  • Vice Chair McElynn announced the new County Administrator Michael Moore; Mr. Moore was then introduced and spoke briefly
  • YTD presentation by County CFO Denise Christmas of financial reports for General Fund, Capital Improvement Fund, all Enterprise Funds
  • Public hearing and second reading of an ordinance authorizing the conveyance of multiple parcels from Beaufort County to SCDOT in connection with SC 802 Sams Point Road right turn lane
  • Public hearing and approval of a resolution authorizing the Interim County Administrator to execute the documents necessary and to provide funds to procure the real property known as the Mitchelville tract
  • First reading of an ordinance to make appropriations for County government and special purpose districts for FY '24-'25
  • First reading of an ordinance to provide for the levy of tax for school purposes for Beaufort County FY '24-'25
  • Approval of a resolution to commit funds provided by Beaufort County to the Technical College of the Lowcountry for construction of the Arthur Brown Regional Workforce Training Center
  • Approval of resolution authorizing the allocation of ARPA funds to Hargray and enter into an agreement to use funds for broadband service expansion on St. Helena Island

From the Consent Agenda:

  • Third reading of an ordinance amending the Beaufort County 2040 Comprehensive Plan to add the Beaufort County Long-Term Resilience Strategy as an appendix
  • Third reading of an ordinance to accept and appropriate funds from the SC Opioid Settlement of Funds
  • Recommend approval to award a contract to Talbert, Bright and Ellington for professional airport planning services

There were no matters arising out of Executive Session.

 

The next Public Facilities and Safety Committee meeting will be Monday, June 24, at 3 p.m.

The next regular County Council meeting will be Monday, June 10, at 5 p.m.
