Highlights and Actions: Community Services and Land Use Committee and Beaufort County Council

The Beaufort County Community Services and Land Use Committee met Monday and here are some highlights:

- Amanda Dickman, County Library Director, gave an update on the Port Royal Library Branch
Rob Merchant, County Planning Director, gave a brief update on the possibility of a Lady's Island Plan - Presentation of Friends of Fort Fremont 2023 Annual Report
- Amanda Dickman, County Library Director, gave an update on the Port Royal Library Branch
- Audra Antonacci-Ogden, Beaufort County ACA, introduced Ben Boswell as the new Beaufort County Human Services Director
- Committee action was taken on the following agenda items:
- Approval to Council of a resolution authorizing the Interim Administrator to execute a volunteer service agreement with Friends of Fort Fremont to provide services at Fort Fremont Preserve and History Center for the benefit of the County
- Approval to Council of a resolution to support the recommendation to the Governor to nominate the Beaufort County "Carolina Bright" Estuary into the National Estuary System
- Approval to Council of a resolution authorizing the Interim Administrator to execute documents for procurement of Hilton Head Island Mitchelville tract
- Approval to Council of resolution to establish Beaufort County's Community Development Priority List
- Approval to Council of an ordinance amending the single use plastic bags
The Beaufort County Council held their regular meeting beginning at 5 p.m., Monday evening.
Below are some highlights from that meeting:

- A proclamation was read recognizing National Correctional Officers Week
- A proclamation was read recognizing Emergency Medical Services Week
- Council Member McElynn then recognized the staff from Clerk to Council citing their hard work and dedication
- Voted to move to Public Facilities Committee a proposed ordinance for 2024 Transportation Sales and Use tax referendum
- Public hearing and second reading or an ordinance amending the Beaufort County 2040 Comprehensive Plan to add to the Beaufort County
- Public hearing and second reading of an ordinance to accept and appropriate funds from the SC Opioid Relief Fund
- Public hearing and first reading of an ordinance to consider a zoning map amendment for 86.16 acres, located at 98 Jennings Road--referred back to Public Facilities--this item was denied for approval on a 7-2 vote.
- First reading of an ordinance authorizing the Interim Administrator to convey multiple parcels of real property from Beaufort County to SC DOT as part of SC802 Sams Point Road right turn lane
- Approved a resolution to accept the USDA Composting and and Food Waste Reduction program grant
Highlights from the Consent Agenda:
- Third reading of an ordinance amending Chapter 99 Stormwater Management
- Third reading of an ordinance amending ordinance 2023/32 an ordinance to amend the Beaufort County Ordinance Establishing a Road Use Fee
- Approval for a request to purchase a TEK84 Body Scanner for the Detention Center

The next Community Services and Land Use Committee meeting will be Monday, June 10, at 3 p.m.
The next regular County Council meeting will be Tuesday, May 28, at 5 p.m.
