On November 9, Hilton Head Island Airport hosted special guests, elected representatives, aeronautics officials, and community partners for an official groundbreaking celebration to mark the start of Phase I of its Terminal Improvements Project.

“This is a huge milestone for the life of Hilton Head Island Airport but now we’re excited to begin construction.” said Hilton Head Island Airport Director Jon Rembold. “The finished product going to deliver a better experience for our customers, so that’s what we’re most excited about.”

The project is spearheaded by architecture firm The Wilson Group, headquartered in Charlotte, NC, and will be executed by Edison Foard. The contract, valued at $30,898,447.83, is projected to span two years and is funded through a combination of FAA Grants, SC Aeronautics Grants, State Funds secured by the local delegation and airport revenue.

Speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony included Beaufort County Interim Administrator John Robinson, Beaufort County Councilman Thomas Reitz, Hilton Head Island Mayor Alan Perry, David McConnell from Edison Foard Construction, and South Carolina Representative Jeff Bradley.

The key benefits of Phase I of the Terminal Improvements Project focus heavily on raising the passenger experience: the scope of Phase 1 of the project encompasses a state-of-the-art TSA screening point, pedestrian flow and terminal access improvements, new boarding bridges, and enhanced boarding gate areas.

As the project takes flight, the airport looks forward to serving its community and visitors with enhanced facilities that reflect the region's dedication to innovation, progress and service.
