Welcome to Beaufort County
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the official website for Beaufort County Government.
Beaufort County is one of South Carolina’s fastest-growing communities, situated along the Atlantic coast between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. We believe our vision statement truly reflects our community, as Beaufort County is “one of the most desirable places in the United States to live, work, and enjoy a sense of community in a culturally diverse coastal setting.”
Beaufort County is rich in history, culturally diverse, and home to a pristine natural outdoor environment, registered historic districts, three military installations, award-winning educational systems, fine dining, shopping, and so much more! Beaufort has also recently been designated as the site for the Reconstruction Era National Monument.
The Beaufort district was formed in 1769 and named for Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort. Today, Beaufort County Council operates with eleven elected members from single districts under the Council-Administrator form of government. The Council has legislative responsibilities, to include adopting ordinances and resolutions which help govern the County, and administrative responsibilities such as levying taxes, establishing a budget, and appropriating funds. The Beaufort County Administrator, who is hired by County Council, oversees the daily operations of the County.
Beaufort County understands that we must govern for today and tomorrow. We feel we are accomplishing this goal in part through County Council’s strategic goals and the Beaufort County Comprehensive Plan. This website provides access to the many services provided by Beaufort County, services that help preserve and enhance the quality of life in our community. I invite you to explore our website to learn more.
On behalf of Beaufort County Council, County Administration, and staff, welcome to Beaufort County!
Respectfully,
Joe Passiment, Chairman
Beaufort County Council
