Beaufort County Council Holds Sales Tax Project and Funding Workshop

Beaufort County Council recently held the first in a series of Sales Tax Workshops, taking a deep dive into the progress of the 2018 Sales Tax transportation projects. The discussion focused on ensuring these projects are completed efficiently while also looking ahead to future infrastructure needs.
A key focus of the discussion was on completing the County’s pathway projects as outlined in Beaufort County Resolution 2019/22, which prioritizes connectivity and equitable distribution of available funds. These efforts are aimed at expanding pedestrian and bicycle pathways to create a safer, more accessible community. By integrating pathway improvements alongside roadway projects, the County will increase mobility and improve the overall quality of life for all residents.
Beaufort County Administrator Mike Moore recognized the challenge ahead of County Council and staff, stating, “We will need to prioritize and balance the remaining transportation projects against the funding available from the 2018 Sales Tax. Beaufort County will be working diligently to successfully complete projects that improve traffic flow and increase public safety. This is the first of several workshops we will be holding to discuss these priorities and to explore additional funding options for critical projects and infrastructure that we may bring back to the voters in the future.”
Council members and staff also explored potential future funding options, including local option fees and sales tax referenda, as potential ways to support ongoing needs and upcoming projects.
Council Chair Alice Howard stressed the importance of planning ahead and being fiscally responsible, stating: "Responsibly completing what we can of the 2018 Sales Tax projects is a top priority to Council. Workshops like this help us define and establish priorities and project scopes that fit within the funding and resources currently available. At the same time, we need to think long-term and find responsible ways to address our county’s growing infrastructure and facility needs."
Those interested in viewing the workshop in its entirety can do so through Beaufort County TV here. Residents are encouraged to review the workshop materials online and stay engaged as discussions on infrastructure funding continue. Future meeting dates will be announced on beaufortcountysc.gov.
