Beaufort County has been recognized with a 2020 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The awards honor innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents.
Receiving a 2020 Achievement Award in the category of Financial Management, NACo recognized the Investment Management Program developed by the Beaufort County Treasurer’s Office, for its innovative and outstanding approach to addressing a commonplace function of local government, that of investing public money.
Since taking office in 2015, Beaufort County Treasurer Maria Walls, CPA has led positive and meaningful progress in the Treasurer’s Office.
“I want our taxpayers to know that our efforts are not spent solely on the functions they see, but every aspect of our operations,” said Treasurer Walls. “Having a successful investment program is not at the forefront of people’s minds but it can provide a significant revenue stream to local governments without impacting our taxpayers. With over 3,000 counties nationwide, it is an absolute honor to have our program recognized by the National Association of Counties not just for the hard work we have put into the program but because it sheds light on an otherwise unnoticed topic.”
Nationally, awards are given in 18 different categories that reflect the vast, comprehensive services counties provide. The categories include children and youth, criminal justice and public safety, information technology, financial management, civic engagement and many more.
