Required Documents for Processing

Documents needed for processing some of the most common types of personal property:

Homestead Application

  1. 1. Documents Required:
    • Real Property – Legal Residence (4%) with Assessor’s Office
    • Driver’s license(s) of listed property owner(s)
  2.  Qualification Based On:
    • Age – Driver’s license, South Carolina ID, or Medicare Card/Birth Certificate
    • Blind – Documentation from licensed ophthalmologist
    • Disability – Third Party Query (TPQY) form OR Benefits Planning Query (BPQY) from Social Security showing individual as being 100% totally and permanently disabled
  3. For Property Held in a Trust:
    • Pages of trust naming the Trustee(s) and the Income Beneficiary(ies)
    • If the property is held under multiple Trusts, these pages will need to be provided from each individual Trust

Please note that additional documentation (e.g. Marriage license, SC1040 income taxes, Articles of Organization, etc.) may be requested for infrequent circumstances. Vehicle – New Application

  1. Driver’s license(s) of listed vehicle buyer(s)/owner(s)
  2. Dealer Bill of Sale or the signed-over Title, if recently purchased
  3. Vehicle Registration (most recent) or Title, if moving into South Carolina from another state

Vehicle – Moving into Beaufort County from Another County in South Carolina

  1. Driver’s license(s) of listed vehicle owner(s) updated to reflect current Beaufort County address
  2. Vehicle Registration or Title

Vehicle – Deletion of Renewal Tax

  1. DMV Document – Form 5051 showing license plate has been turned in/deactivated
  2. Renewed vehicle registration and out of county paid tax receipt, if reregistered and paid in new county of residence

Vehicle – Prorate a 120 Day Tax Notice or Partial Refund

  1. DMV Document – Form 5051 showing license plate has been turned in/deactivated
  2. Documented sale of property, such as a Bill of Sale, copies of the front and back of the signed-over title, lease termination documents, letter from insurance company claiming total loss and transfer of ownership, dealership trade-in paperwork, etc., if vehicle was sold
  3. Out of state vehicle registration or title, if reregistered in a different state

Please note that 120 Day tax notices and refunds are prorated based on the month the South Carolina license plate is dated as being returned to DMV.

Vehicle – Active Duty Military, Registering a Vehicle from Another State to South Carolina

  1. Military ID
  2. Vehicle Registration (most recent) or Title
  3. Latest Leave and Earning Statement (LES)
  4. If the active duty member recently checked in to South Carolina, their signed and stamped Original Orders (printouts of the online Web Orders are not accepted) or Reporting Endorsement Orders
  5. If a co-owner is listed, their dependent military ID if a dependent OR military ID and latest LES if active duty – if not a dependent, their photo ID

Vehicle – Active Duty Military, Purchased a Vehicle

  1. Military ID
  2. Dealer Bill of Sale or signed-over Title
  3. Latest Leave and Earning Statement (LES)
  4. LES for the same month the vehicle was purchased (if different from the latest LES)
  5. If a co-buyer is listed, their dependent military ID if a dependent OR military ID and respective LES’s if active duty – if not a dependent, their photo ID

Vehicle – Active Duty Military, Exemption from Renewal Tax

  1. Leave and Earning Statement (LES) for the same month the bill is due, or up to 2 months prior
  2. If a co-owner is listed, their dependent military ID OR respective LES if active duty

Boat/Motor – New Application

  1. Driver’s license(s) of listed watercraft buyer(s)/owner(s)
  2. Signed-over title(s) or “Section H. Certified and True Bill of Sale for Watercraft and Outboard Motors” completed on DNR’s Watercraft/Outboard Motor Application, if recently purchased
  3. Title(s) and/or registration(s), if moving into South Carolina from another state

Business Personal Property

  1. Annual Business Personal Property Tax Return filed through MyDORWAY

Rental Property

  1. Return on 6% Assessed Real Property or Rental Residential Property Return, located under Auditor Forms
